The JBL Boombox connected speaker won the 2017/2018 Best Portable Speaker Award from the European Image and Sound Association (EISA), and made it to Robot Advance for €399.99. A price that can make you think but is very reasonable in relation to the market for Bluetooth connected speakers and the features offered by the JBL Boombox, which you can discover below:
Inspired by the speakers of the 90s, the JBL Boombox has a typical strap that will allow you to carry it effortlessly and on your shoulder wherever you go. And you will need it because the format of this Bluetooth speaker is out of the ordinary: the speaker weighs 5.25 kg, is 45.85 cm long, 25.45 cm wide in the thickest part and 19.55 cm in the narrowest part. It has a large solid handle for changing the mode of transport.
The body is IPX7 waterproof. This means that the JBL box is resistant to water jets and can be immersed - up to 1 meter deep - for 30 minutes as long as the cover closes the doors and connections. The JBL Boombox speaker weighs more than 5 kg and is inspired by the Boomboxes of the 90s.
The JBL Boombox speaker offers high sound power for a wireless model, with a focus on bass reproduction. For this purpose, the brand has two 4-inch woofers, loudspeakers responsible for reproducing low and mid frequencies. The high frequencies are performed by two 20 mm tweeters, much smaller than those for bass.
This unit can reach a total power of 60 Watt RMS (2 x 30 Watt RMS) when plugged into the outlet. If the box only works with the battery, the total power drops to 40 Watt RMS (2 x 20 Watt RMS).
The frequency response is 50 Hz to 20 kHz, which means that the Boombox must reproduce almost the entire range of sounds that the human ear is able to pick up (20 Hz to 20 kHz). The signal-to-noise ratio is 80 dB, considered high enough to emit clean sounds - the higher the signal-to-noise ratio, the better as it indicates how many times the signal level is higher than the noise level.
The JBL Boombox provides a Bluetooth 4.2 connection and can be up to 10 meters away from the devices to which it is connected. The model allows you to connect two mobile phones or two tablets simultaneously, allowing you to control the speaker alternately. This feature removes applications and allows you to consider using it with smartphones of all brands.
The box is equipped with JBL Connect+, which allows you to connect more than 100 branded speakers that also have this feature, such as JBL Flip 4. The purpose is to increase the sound power, but it is interesting to note that all devices must be within Bluetooth range - in this case, less than 10 meters. The connection continues to be established via the JBL Connect application, available for iPhone (iOS) and Android.
With an integrated microphone, the phone also allows you to answer phone calls and supports Siri voice assistants and Google Assistant. Simply tap the "Voice Assistant" button on the JBL Connect application to turn the Boombox's physical "play" button into a wizard activation button and send your voice commands.
Under the protective hood, the JBL Boombox speaker has two USB ports for charging smartphones and tablets. There is also a third micro USB input, exclusively for firmware update, a 3.5 mm headphone connector and a battery charger input.
One of JBL Boombox's great assets is its powerful 20,000 mAh battery. Not only does it provide up to 24 hours of music playback time, but it also allows the speaker to function as an external charger for devices such as mobile phones and tablets. The counterpart of this external charger function is of course the weight of the enclosure and its charging time. It will take about 6.5 hours to fully charge it and then enjoy it for the next 24 hours.
